US Building and Safety Codes

Decorative Chimney Caps are regulated by several US Building and safety codes, which were established in the year 2000 after dangerous, poorly made Chimney Caps began to flood the market and cause problems to homeowners and business.

Below are the building codes that regulate decorative Chimney Shrouds in the United States today. The International Mechanical Code (806.6), the International Residential Code (R1004.3), and the International Fire Code (603.6.3) all state that "Decorative Chimney Caps shall not be installed at the termination of factory-built chimneys, except where such (caps) are listed and labeled for use with the specific factory-built chimney system".
